If you've just ordered an EV — or you're seriously thinking about it — this is one of the first questions that comes up. The short answer is no, it's not legally required. The longer answer is that without one, EV ownership is noticeably more frustrating, and the financial case weakens considerably. Here's everything you need to know to make the right call for your situation.

Is a home EV charger legally required?

No. There's no law that says you must install a home charger when you get an electric car. Every EV comes with a granny cable — a lead that plugs into a standard 13A household socket — and technically that's all you need to charge at home.

But just because you can doesn't mean you should rely on it as your main charging method. Here's why.

What happens if you don't install one?

A standard 3-pin socket charges at around 2.3kW — adding roughly 8 miles of range per hour. For most EVs, that means a full charge from empty takes 17–28 hours. In practice, you'd top up rather than charge from empty — but you're still looking at significantly less range each morning than if you'd charged overnight on a proper charger.

There's also a safety element. Standard sockets aren't designed for sustained high loads over many hours. Charging an EV draws around 10 amps continuously — for 8, 10, sometimes 15 hours at a time. Older sockets, worn connections, and extension leads are all risks in this scenario. A dedicated charger has built-in earthing protection and automatic safety shutoffs that a wall socket simply doesn't.

⚠️ Never use an extension lead to charge an EV. The sustained current draw generates significant heat at the connections — this is a genuine fire risk regardless of how good the extension lead appears to be.

What about public charging instead?

Public charging is fine for long journeys and as a backup — but as a daily charging method, it's expensive and unreliable. Rapid chargers at motorway services cost 65–85p/kWh. At that rate, you're paying a similar amount per mile as petrol, which undermines the main reason most people switch to electric in the first place.

Destination chargers at supermarkets and car parks are cheaper — sometimes free — but you're dependent on availability, working chargers, and being in the right place at the right time. That's a lot of planning for something that should be straightforward.

Who actually doesn't need a home charger?

There are situations where a home charger genuinely isn't an option — and it's worth being honest about them:

For everyone else — anyone with a driveway, garage or private parking who does typical UK mileage — a home charger isn't just nice to have. It's what makes EV ownership actually work.

A home charger doesn't just make EV ownership easier.
For most drivers, it's what makes it viable.

How much does it cost and is it worth it?

A home EV charger installation starts from £899 including supply and installation at EV Monkey. That includes the charger, all wiring, Part P certification, and our 2-year workmanship guarantee. For most homes in West Sussex, East Sussex and Surrey, that's the complete cost.

On a smart overnight tariff like Octopus Go (7p/kWh), the saving over petrol at 10,000 miles per year is around £480 annually. The charger pays for itself in under two years — and after that, every penny of fuel saving goes straight back in your pocket.

Should I get it installed before my EV arrives?

Yes — and many customers do exactly this. The process takes less than a week from booking to installation in most cases. Getting the charger sorted before delivery day means you plug in on night one and wake up to a full battery. No scrambling around with granny cables or hunting for public chargers while you wait.

Bottom line

You don't have to — but you really should

A home EV charger isn't legally required, but for anyone with off-street parking it's the single best thing you can do to make EV ownership work properly. It's faster, safer, cheaper per mile, and it removes the friction from daily charging entirely. Most EV owners who initially thought they'd manage without one end up getting one within three months.
